Sreebhumi Sporting Club
Sreebhumi Sporting Club in north Kolkata has recreated the Jagannath Temple of Puri, one of the favorite destinations for Bengalis. Iron has been used in the making of this Durga puja pandal to lend it the look of stone sculpture. Visitors to the Sreebhumi Sporting Club pandal will be offered Khaja, a popular sweetmeat in Odisha. The puja committee has brought craftsmen from Odisha to make this Puri temple prasad for visitors.
Bhabanipore 75 Palli
Bhabanipore 75 Palli in South Kolkata is up with one of the best pandals of Durga Puja 2016. The interior of the puja pandal is modeled on Arshinagar, the city of mirrors, with a kaleidoscope of Rajasthani folk arts. The entry to the pandal is through a 45-foot elephant styled gate.
Hindustan Park Puja
The Hindustan Park Puja committee is known for their Durga puja themes and pandals in South Kolkata. The Hindustan Park puja pandal is nostalgic in theme replete with reminiscences of the good old days of Bengal when children used to hang around their grandmothers to hear fairy tales in the courtyard. Some items of everyday use, which have gradually disappeared from Bengali households, are on display inside the pandal.
Shovabazar Burtola Sarbojonin Durgotsab
The air of Kolkata is rife with talk about the 83-year-old Shovabazar Burtola Sarbojonin Durgotsab which is said to have got one of the best Durga puja pandals 2016 in north Kolkata. The theme is once-upon-a-time thriving days of Kolkata’s age-old café and coffee culture. Replicas of such Kolkata café will make the passage for visitors to the main pandal named Sri Durga Cabin. How the cafes lost out to modern fast food outlets is another attraction of this puja pandal.
Ekdalia Evergreen Club
The Meenakshi Temple of Madurai is the theme of Ekdalia Evergreen Club in south Kolkata among the Durga puja pandals 2016. The pandal has been made with fiberglass, thermaocol and bamboo. The ceiling of the pandal will feature a colossal chandelier from Jaipur. Ekdalia Evergree Club is known for modelling their puja pandal on a famous Indian temple.
Kolkata Pouro Karmochari Sarbojonin Durgostab
‘Bisorjon theke Bodhon’ is the theme of Kolkata Pouro Karmochari Sarbojonin Durgostab Samity in Hazra. Initiated by Netaji Subhas himself in 1942, this Kolkata puja puts on display 13 idols of Goddess Durga this year. The idols give different perspectives of the goddess from an unfinished one to a complete one.
Suruchi Sangha is known for one of the best Durga puja themes and pandals in Kolkata. Peace and harmony is the theme of the Suruchi Sangha puja this year in contrast to the socio-political issues across the world. Their pandal is a recreation of a monastery in Bhutan and decorated with Buddhist symbols, flags as well as messages of peace. 30 lakh rupees has been spent on this theme. Jeet Ganguly has composed the theme song for Suruchi Sangha this year.
Baghajatin Rabindrapally Sarbojanin Durgapuja
Among the pandals of Durga Puja 2016 in Kolkata, the Baghajatin Rabindrapally Sarbojanin Durgapuja Committee has built a replica of the British Wax Museum Madame Tussauds. Make sure to visit this puja if the idols of Goddess Durga and her companions resemble wax statues.
Chetla Agrani Club
The art of meditation has been depicted in the interior of the Chetla Agrani Club puja pandal. The idol of Goddess Durga has been given the impression of a meditating sage on a cosmic journey in the universe. Structured with three special types of bamboo from Assam, the pandal also features a giant Shiva linga which is made of bamboo too. “Bindu Gyaner Sindhu Pari, Saat Sagorer Ek Tarani” is the name of the puja theme of the Chetla Agrani Club puja pandal.
Singhi Park Puja
Kolkata’s Singhi Park puja is in its 75th year of celebration. Their pandal is modeled on the Ambaji Mata Temple of Mount Abu in Rajasthan. This temple, sandstone architecture, is one of the Shakti Peeths in India. The pandal boasts a golden tomb on top like that of the temple.
Tridhara Sammilani Club
The tribal heritage of India is the theme of the puja organized by Tridhara Sammilani. Known for its innovative Durga puja pandals, Tridhara Sammilani has highlighted the rich culture of Indian tribes in the interior of the pandal with focus on how the tribal people are struggling to preserve their cultural heritage amidst the blows of urbanization. The pandal is adorned with traditional hunting weapons and buffalo heads made of clay. Two troupes from Jhargarm and Gir will perform live in rhythm of the theme song composed by singer Abhijeet.
Naktala Udayan Sangha
‘Know thyself’ is the greatest knowledge of the world and Naktala Udayan Sangha has come up with a theme based on it for their puja pandal in south Kolkata. The theme of the pandal is a visual journey to our innermost world where the divine power is hidden. The inside of the pandal gives an impression of ‘spaceless space’ which will lead to the discovery of god within ourselves. This theme of introspection and self knowledge is the first of its kind among the Durga Puja pandals 2016.
